I can’t give you advice any more incisive than that of Bukowski, but I’m not finished with the list, either. – Csaba Kelemen Charles Bukowski: Friendly Advice to a Lot of Young Men By the time I became a licensed architect, I’d learned how to work together with others. The diploma project seemed too big and complex a task for me at the time – many parts of it weren’t down my alley – and I felt I couldn’t handle it alone. This constrained nature of the situation may have been pedagogical intent, or perhaps coincidence, but I learned from it and from then on I quit trying on my own. I was always looking for people better than me. Luckily I found partners, and whatever we started, there were always friends with whom we could think together productively. Without them, none of the big stories of my life would have taken place. Of course, they are not my stories, but the stories of everyone involved in them, and that’s the good thing about it. Together everything is better, funnier, more exciting, easier. There’s more inspiration, ideas come faster, decisions are easier, energy is multiplied. There’s always someone who can move things forward. So, whatever you set out to do, talk about it first! With anyone, everyone. If you believe in what you’ve come up with, there will be people who stand by you, and then you can get on with it, in my opinion. – Balázs Tompa

Csaba Kelemen: To me, there is no difference between designing a website and designing a space, both function by the basic principles of design: form, structure, function.

The appearance of the internet, more precisely, the first browser, Netscape Navigator in 1993, was a huge turning point in the lives of Csaba Kelemen and Balázs Tompa. A peer of theirs tore out a page from a magazine in the library of the Academy of Applied Arts, which heralded the revolutionary development of the internet, describing how big multinational companies were standing in line at the hottest web design studios in New York to get their hands on a website. The internet continued to influence their work, “we evolved simultaneously with the internet, which meant ever-growing opportunities”. After graduating from the Budapest University of Technology, they briefly worked as architects, but were constantly looking for new ways to break out, and their creative drive led them to start a parthership. In 1996, with their friends, interior designer Géza Kerti and Zsolt Karajz, they founded Kirowski, a company providing services of web design and advertising graphics. The then small company’s first big commission was the website for the Pepsi Sziget ‘97 festival. They began to grow rapidly owing to the big and complex commissions. The company later transformed into an advertising agency, and nothing proves their success better than their numerous clients, professional awards and loyal clientele. Balázs and Csaba are very proud of having developed a design process that they have been able to apply, and that despite constantly seeking new paths, they have always been able to keep things under control, often with the involvement of other professionals – which is how Péter Novák and economist Zoltán Kovács came to the company. After eighteen years, the duo returned to architecture, as it became increasingly important to them to create lasting value, so they founded their new company, UERBAN. Their goal is to go beyond architecture as a mere service, so their company acts as investor, concept developer, marketing agency, contractor and real estate agency all in one, with the two architects playing a central role in their projects as generalists.
