System-islands
Examining systems within and beyond architecture.
↓ I started my studies in 1973 at the Academy of Applied Arts, where I wanted to create everything but architecture. ↓ A well-functioning system is more important to me than obeying the urge to create something unique or aesthetically appealing. ↓ This is what non-design is all about, solving one thing after another, to the highest standard, in the most plausible manner. While representation – as intention and idea – never even comes up. ↓ The factors influencing the built environment have never been this complex. Our affairs have never been this interconnected. Our need for agreement has never been greater. ↓ I believe that architecture – in its current form – has exhausted its potentials. However, we find that we are living in malfunctioning or entirely dysfunctional systems, which are increasingly interconnected. ↓ Mapping and addressing these different neighbourhood-city-region scale clusters could be the new direction for architecture.
