You have chosen the most beautiful vocation, which is also one of the most difficult professions that comes with the greatest responsibility. To be good architects, you actually need a little bit to not be architects. School doesn’t always help you to not end up as a blinkered specialist, but this is also your responsibility. A good and responsible architectural planner should understand people as well as the world, be capable of critical thinking, making moral decisions, and standing up for values. It will also be your responsibility to reduce the gap between society and the architectural profession. We need to come down from our ivory tower, make our world understandable to others and better understand what surrounds us! Read a lot, go to the theatre, go to concerts! Study a little anatomy, psychology, sociology, ethics, history, political science, law, economics, ecology! Spend a lot of time in nature! Get involved in communities, better yet, organise them! But the most important thing is to always remain children to some extent and never forget the joy of creation! – Máté Győrffy

Manifesto ↓

Architecture is often called frozen music. As a high school student, I thought I would fulfil my potential in this profession and in design, but in my first years of university I found that the creative freedom attainable in music is not available to me in design, at least not in the form of houses.

Career path ↓

Architecture is not only about materials coming together in conjunction, but also about the mutual impact of people interacting in an urban fabric. Thinking on the latter scale, Máté Győrffy, Deputy Mayor for Urban Development of Terézváros, 6th District of Budapest, is working to create a balanced environment for the residents of the district. In Máté’s perception, balance is key, and it is something to strive for in all fields. This is what he sought as a student at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as an architect at the Budapest Chief Architect Office, and also as the guitarist and manager of the band Képzelt Város (Imagined City). Although his music career is currently on the back burner, he still finds making music the best form of relaxation. Through his journalist father, he has always been interested in public life and social inequality, and aims to achieve a broad impact with his work. It was after the 2018 parliamentary elections that he felt the need to put his principles into action, helping the opposition Momentum Movement from an urban planning aspect first as an activist, then as municipal councillor of Budapest’s 6th District. According to Máté, both the architect and the politician have a central role to play, in which decisions must be made by synthesising the knowledge of several professions. In the run-up to the 2019 municipal elections, he collaborated with mayoral candidate Tamás Soproni to promote, instead of grandiose political promises, a pragmatic, comprehensive public space renewal programme, replacing cars with people and the built environment with the natural environment in the long term. Their professional vision was appreciated by the district’s residents, and the team got to work laying the foundations for the project named Terézváros 2030. Among the wide range of improvements completed since the start are greening, traffic calming and facade renovation. The documentation of these as well as planned and ongoing improvements is available in a public online database. Terézváros 2030 has shown that it is possible to make a real difference in politics through the consistent implementation of an easily understandable urbanistic vision. As a result, the district’s leadership gained the confidence of its residents once again in the 2024 elections.
